The Scholars' Program

Humanities in Medicine Scholars are eligible for the Charles and Linda Wilson Humanities and Medicine Scholarships. These scholarships can be awarded for up to three years. Students must apply for a renewal of this scholarship each year. Financial need will be used in determining the amount of the award. Scholars will also receive a certificate upon graduation honoring their work in the program. To be a Humanities in Medicine Scholar, students must:

• major in an approved humanities area (see the list) and declare pre-medicine as pre-health interest.
• complete three courses (9 hours) from the list of Humanities in Medicine courses, including 3 hours in a core course and 6 hours in approved related courses (see list), at least one of which is a 300 or 400 level course. HMED 397, Directed Experience in Health Care, cannot count towards the 9 hours required.
• participate in at least one Humanities in Medicine lecture or event each year.
• complete at least one professional shadowing observation or volunteer experience each year.
• register annually for the Scholar's Program and declare medicine as their area of pre-professional development with the Arts & Sciences pre-health advisors.

Humanities in Medicine Minor

The Humanities in Medicine minor requires 18 hours of course work, including 3 hours of directed experience (shadowing, volunteer work) in an approved medical setting (HMED 397). Students take at least one course (3 credit hours) from the list of core courses and an additional 12 hours of courses from the approved list of related classes. The minor is open to all students, no matter what their majors or career plans.

Other courses, especially special topics courses and honors seminars, may fulfill Humanities in Medicine requirements with permission of the faculty coordinator or pre-health advisors. Students are responsible for completing course substitution forms.
