The university's geography student honorary society - Alphi Phi chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon - was one of 11 chapters worldwide to earn an Honors Chapter Award for 2016.

"This is largely due to the stellar academic achievement of students interested in the discipline and performing well in [geography] courses," Rebecca Buller, professor of geography and undergraduate advisor, wrote.

They were also one of 12 chapters worldwide in 2015 to receive the award.

"[This] chapter is commended not only for recognizing the superior scholarship of your geography students, but also for planning activities that celebrate and spread the word about geography to your campus and community," Susy Ziegler, the Second Vice President of Gamma Theta Upsilon International Geographic Honor Society, wrote on behalf of the awards committee and GTU International President Burrell Montz.

Chapters must meet a set of criteria to receive the award.
