Professor of Practice Review and Reappointment Guidelines

Professor of Practice
Review and Reappointment Guidelines

Board of Regents policy requires that a Professor of Practice appointment of two or more years requires 12-month advance notice for non-reappointment.

Continuation Review

The continuation review concerns whether a Professor of Practice will be considered for reappointment in the final year of his or her contract and takes place a year before the end of the contract. If a Professor of Practice is not going to be put up for reappointment in the final year, whether because the department will not seek reappointment or because the Dean does not approve continuation, appropriate notification would be provided to the Professor of Practice one year prior to the end of the contract. The Professor of Practice would remain on the faculty through the end of the contract period. The chair must notify the Dean of the department’s decision not to put the Professor of Practice up for reappointment in the year prior to the end of the contract. If a department intends to consider a Professor of Practice for reappointment in the final year of the contract, the chair should send a short email to the Associate Dean for Faculty that this is the case in the year prior to the end of the contract. The decision to have a reappointment review in the last year of the contract does not signify that the reappointment vote will be positive. It simply says that the reappointment vote will take place.

Reappointment Review

Reappointment reviews of Professors of Practice will typically be processed in the final year of the current contract.  The content of these reviews should follow the guidelines in the College of Arts and Sciences Documentation Format for Reappointment for Professor of Practice faculty.  If a Professor of Practice is not reappointed in the final year of a contract, appropriate notice will be given that they have one additional year on the faculty.

Reappointment with Promotion

Reappointment with promotion will be processed at the point where the determination has been made that the faculty member has met the established criteria for promotion.   Typically, this will be at the end of a contract period.  The content of the file should follow the guidelines in the College of Arts and Sciences Documentation Format for Promotion of Professor of Practice faculty.
