Why did you select your major(s) and minor(s)? Were there any experiences that convinced you to declare?

I have always wanted to go into the medical field and a fun way to learn about medicine is through my gerontology classes. Gerontology has taught me a lot about the aging process and the different difficulties and triumphs that come with that.

What is your favorite course you have taken from your program(s) and why?

My favorite course I have ever taken is the Psychology of Gender. Through the class, I was able to look at issues from perspectives I previously hadn't and learned the various theories as to why humans have evolved the way we have.

Who have been some of your strongest mentors or role models here?

My best mentor here on campus has been Ashley Toney, the graduate student I have done research under. She has taught me numerous techniques in the lab as well as reaffirmed my life plans and given me advice along the way.

Do you have research experience?

This year I have started my first UCARE scientific research project. My project has been on gut metabolites and their impact on health. Each of us had microorganisms in our bodies that break down the food we can't digest or interacts with any other outside substances. Microorganisms make up one's microbiome and can have both positive or negative effects depending on what foods are consumed and what microorganisms are present in your gut.

Have you had an internship/job?

This year I have also worked as a chemistry lab TA. Having a good chemistry base from my major has given me the background knowledge needed in order to effectively lead a lab. I have felt well prepared and competent in my abilities.

What are you involved in on campus?

I have been involved with amazing groups such as NHRI Leadership Mentoring where I have mentored a sophomore student at Lincoln Southeast. I am also the Secretary of the Courtyards Government, the Volunteer Coordinator for the American Medical Student Association, and a member of the Honors Program Student Advisory Board, an Honors Ambassador, an Honors Peer Mentor, and a Well-Being Coach for the University Health Center.

What are your plans after graduation?

Ideally, after graduation I will attend Medical School at UNMC in hopes of becoming an Oncologist.
