Why you chose your major

I originally came into college undecided, but after taking an Intro to Sociology course I became really interested and loved the professor - she recommended that I declare a Sociology major. I also love the sciences and it was easy to declare Biology along with all the pre-requisites for medical school.

Favorite course

Drugs and Society - it was really cool to me that I was able to connect both my interest areas. The biological side hit on the way drugs affect a person's physiology and the chemicals that change within their brains. The sociological side observed how people react as a society to drugs and how culture, politics, and the economy can influence someone's drug use.

Research or internship experience

I have the most exciting job in the world! I get to do experimental research alongside one of my favorite professors, Dr. Kristi Montooth. I began helping out with projects in her lab about a year ago and developed an interest in my own project. I applied for UCARE (gives funding to undergraduates doing research) and have begun working on my project which studies the role of free radicals in the mitochondrion of individuals with Huntingtons disease (a neurodegenerative genetic disorder).

Other involvement

Honors Program, College of Arts and Sciences Student Advisory Board, Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Alpha Epsilon Delta pre-med fraternity, Biology TA

Why you chose Nebraska

Originally I wanted to go to college far away from home. I reluctantly visited UNL during a Pre-Health Red Letter Day and was blown away by the opportunities UNL had to offer in the sciences. Plenty of research opportunities, an incredible anatomy lab, and advisors to help me out on my way to professional school. The proximity to home actually became one of the best parts about UNL - I can be an independent college student, but my family is always just a short drive away.

Student Ambassadors group

Student Ambassadors are undergraduate students who talk to prospective students, parents, alumni, and the general public about the college.
