Why you chose your major

I chose Biological Sciences because I am fascinated by biology and understanding the functions of life. I also appreciate how well it will prepare me for the medical field, which is something that I've known I wanted to do since middle school. I added the biochemistry minor out of practicability. I was already going to be taking most of the courses for my major and the pre-med requirements. My Spanish minor is one that I added because I love learning languages. It allows me to connect with a wider network of people and see the world through another lens. It is also going to be helpful and applicable in my future career.

Favorite and/or most impactful course

I took a virus hunting course during my freshman year and it is the class that has had the biggest impact on me. This class required no prior knowledge of lab techniques or virology, but it quickly moved beyond an introductory level and I learned so much that will be applicable to my future courses. In the class, we collected soil samples and used various techniques to identify and test bacteriophage, which are viruses that infect bacteria. I am also able to say that I have discovered a virus, which is not something that I ever thought that I would do, especially in my first year of college.

Research or internship experience

I am currently one of the interns for Nebraska HOSA-Future Health Professionals. HOSA is a student-led Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) with an emphasis on health care. This organization has been influential in my life and I enjoy having the opportunity to share my passion for health care with people throughout the state of Nebraska and to connect them with various opportunities to further their interest and participation in health care.

Other involvement

I am also an ambassador for the University Honors Program. This allows me to connect with mainly prospective students and their guests to share the benefits of not only the Honors program but also the University to encourage them to take advantage of the most opportunities available to them.

Why you chose Nebraska

For most of my senior year I was convinced I would be going out of state for college, but as I did my campus visits, UNL was the only place that I could truly see myself thriving at. I love how welcoming everyone on campus is and how closely tied UNL is to the greater Lincoln community.

Student Ambassadors are undergraduate students who talk to prospective students, parents, alumni, and the general public about the college.
