An Applause for

Barbara Bullington

Administrative Technician
Department of History

January 2020

“I nominate Barb Bullington for her willingness to train new faculty. She eagerly guided me through the process of learning how to use the new online system for reappointment/tenure. As a super user of the new system, she worked with me diligently and shadowed me as I uploaded my file. She verified that my work was recorded accurately and properly organized. Because of her oversight and generous support, my experience was seamless and successful. I appreciate her generosity of service! Thank you, Barb!”

“Barbara epitomizes efficiency and she is very collegial and willing to go beyond the call of duty. During her tenure in our Department, Barbara has demonstrated mastery in addressing faculty questions. She also works hard in obtaining the schedule that faculty request. On more than one occasion, I have called Barbara and Megan from South Africa and they have assisted me immensely with my questions regarding my schedules for the year of my return as a Fulbright Scholar. Just today, as she operates the office, Barbara helped me reserve a room for a Zoom conversation with one of the authors my class will read. In the final analysis, Barbara is a keen professional whose collegiality enhances everyone's working experience.”

“Barb Bullington is deserving of this award. Barb is critical to the operations of the History department. She is very detailed oriented and delivers on things being done on time. Beyond what she does for the department, Barb is one of the college's top coordinators for the Combined Campaign. The energy and caring spirit she displays within the department is carried over to the university. Please award Barb Bullington the Applause Award!”

“Barb has been indispensable in helping me navigate my road to Full Professor and balancing my teaching assignments as a joint-appointed faculty member in History and Ethnic Studies. By this I mean that she goes beyond logistical support. She has spoken with me at length about how plan out my Fall 2019-Spring 2022 schedule to accommodate my ACLS Fellowship, FDL, and IES course releases. She also points me to the appropriate administrators and staff with whom I need to talk to insure that I meet all benchmarks and expectations for this journey. She went so far as to make me a chart that I have shared with my Chair, Director, and IES administrative staff. I cannot stress enough how she had help alleviate my stress and anxiety about navigating the early stages of the promotion process.”

“Barb is the administrative backbone of our department. She creates an open, friendly, and welcoming office environment. She is exceedingly responsive to faculty queries and requests. I found her to be extremely helpful in ensuring a smooth and timely submission of reappointment as well as tenure and promotion files. The department would be a far drearier and challenging place to work at without her.”

“I am currently the longest serving faculty member in the Department of History, having been teaching here for over forty years. We have had many good secretaries in that time period but in my view Barb is the best ever. She manages the department's affairs with organizational skill and efficiency. She anticipates problems before they occur preventing many issues. Most importantly Barb treats everyone with courtesy and respect from senior faculty to graduate students and undergraduates. When students come in the office seeking help, she goes out of her way to do as much as possible. Uniformly among the faculty she earns the highest plaudits. When the situation demands it she goes above and beyond the requirements of her position to further the department's goals.”

“As Director of the Institute for Ethnic Studies, I rely on Barb's excellent organizing skills to coordinate the Institute's connections with the History Department, which has the largest number of joint-appointed faculty. This ensures a smooth-running operation, particularly around scheduling tasks such as courses. Barb is friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to help with any issue that arises. I believe she is a vital part of the interdepartmental communications that make CAS work and when looking at how the Pound Hall cooperative has begun the function in the past year, she has been a reason for its success even though she is not based in it, for she provides a vital link to one of the important departments the cooperative works with.”

“Barb Bullington is a joy to work with. In her many years in the UNL History Department office, she has proven to be perpetually competent, helpful, and responsible with faculty, staff, and students. Even in times of stress, Barb has remained consistently upbeat and positive, always seeing the best in other people and going out of her way to solve problems for them. She is a wonderful point person for the History Department, representing us with kindness and professionalism. I find it very difficult to imagine our department without her. Please give her an Applause!”
