Guidelines
The college has been advised by legal counsel that we should be more careful to ensure that letters of resignation are definitive. They suggest that the following language should be in such letters to avoid any ambiguity.
The date of retirement would normally be the end of either the fall or spring semester.
Please ask any of your faculty who submit a resignation to use this language although they are naturally free to say whatever else they wish in their letter. This approach should avoid potential problems.
"I, Professor ________________ of the Department of ___________ voluntarily resign from my continuous appointment as a member of the academic-administrative staff of the University of Nebraska and hereby retire (leave out reference to retirement if inappropriate) from University service effective at the close of business on the ____ day of ___________."
