Part One: Overview
15-20 minutes
- Principles of Academic Freedom in the Classroom – A brief overview of guiding principles and expectations regarding academic freedom for faculty and students in the classroom
- Key People in supporting Academic Freedom – A brief overview of key points of contact for help with questions and concerns: unit, college, and university resources
- Process for addressing inquiries – A brief run-down of the process (and key contacts) for responding to internal and external inquiries related to course content and classroom discussions
Part Two: Faculty Experiences and Insights
20-30 minutes
Faculty from CAS and Law will share their experiences and recommendations for sustaining academic freedom in the classroom. Focus on classroom policies and practices that contribute to respectful learning environments in the context of challenging/controversial topics.
Part Three: Small Group Discussions
20 minutes
Small group discussions responding to what faculty have heard during the workshop and additional questions/concerns.
Report-out and Wrap Up
20-25 minutes
Invite recommendations for next steps.
