What were some of you favorite memories of being at UNL and majoring in Global Studies?
UNL and majoring in Global Studies? Being a Global Studies Major offered many opportunities which allowed me to grow and help me move toward a career in healthcare policy and regulation. Some of my favorite memories occurred studying abroad in Valparaiso, Chile and Jaipur, India. I made lifelong friends but I also gained international experience. Thanks to this experience I have the ability to deal with ambiguity, adapt quickly to new surroundings, and relate with people from different backgrounds, which are important skills to have in any workplace. I am beyond grateful for my experience in the Global Studies department.

What were some of your favorite and/or most influential classes you took while at UNL?
One of my favorite classes I took at UNL was a Human Trafficking class through the Geography Department. It was a requirement of this class to engage with the community. We discussed ongoing issues with local law enforcement, policy makers, and different non-profit organizations. Human trafficking awareness is an important foundation for all communities to ensure the safety, health, and prosperity of all individuals.

Extracurricular Involvement:
My favorite off campus experience was being a yoga instructor for the Campus Recreation and Outdoor Adventures Center. I had the unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of my participants through increased strength, improved flexibility, and overall stress reduction. I also gained skills that I use today and tried new activities such as rock climbing and backpacking. I also made new friends because I was able to reach tons of new people who were like minded and fitness-loving individuals.

What have you been up to since graduation?
After graduation I accepted a Policy Analyst position through the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. I quickly became a key member to the success of the Nebraska DHHS program through my expertise in Tribal Health and Justice-Involved Health policy. After 3 wonderful years with the organization I applied for a Regulatory Analyst Position through a Healthcare organization which offers health care services to the underserved population in New York City. I have loved my work with healthcare policy and regulation. Individual and community health cannot thrive when elements such as access to healthcare and nutritious food are unavailable or limited.

Advice for current global studies majors:
Don't be afraid to try new things. While there are many stressful components of being a Global Studies major I encourage students to create opportunities for themselves by getting involved with the community around you. UNL has some great on campus jobs which helps immensely when trying to decide which career path to take after graduation and you develop new skills. While I know many of us aspire for a career in the international community, don't be afraid to see what the Lincoln, Nebraska community has to offer. Getting involved with your local community either through work or volunteering will enrich your academic experience in many different ways. It will familiarize you with your community and connect you to people and ideas that will positively impact your perspective.
