The College of Arts and Sciences hosted its fourth annual Graduate Student Writing Retreat from September 11 to 15 at Cedar Point Biological Research Station in the Sandhills. Twenty students participated from areas including communication studies, English, political science, biological sciences, mathematics, modern languages and literatures, sociology, and psychology.
Profs. Max Mueller (classics and religious studies) Kristi Montooth (biological sciences), and Will Thomas (history) served as the faculty facilitators. This year's writer-in-residence was Karen Shoemaker, a novelist and the director of Larksong Writers Place. An alumna of the graduate program in Creative Writing in the college, Shoemaker hosted an inspiring session on her writing life and shared with students her journey as a writer.
Students enjoyed the quiet of Cedar Point and worked on their writing projects, including dissertation chapters, creative works, comprehensive exam essays, master's theses, and scholarly articles. We are very thankful to Cedar Point Biological Station for hosting us and the exceptional hospitality of the Cedar Point staff.
