Dr. Kelsey Burke is an Assistant Professor in Sociology. She has improved the Introduction to Sociology course in addition to teaching mid and upper level undergraduate courses. She receives excellent scores on student evaluations. Dr. Burke makes a point of introducing research methods and data into her classes. She has published two articles on her teaching techniques.
Dr. Lory Dance is an Associate Professor in Sociology. She has taught fourteen different courses in Sociology covering the areas of inequality, intersectionality, migration, race and ethnicity, theory and qualitative methods. She teaches a diverse range of students, from first semester general education students to advanced undergraduate majors to graduate students. She receives evaluation scores above the departmental average. She has clearly developed course goals and stress student engagement in peer learning.
Dr. David Harwood is a Full Professor in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. He teaches a 100 level course on Antarctica in which he uses a number of interactive learning techniques. He also teaches courses in inquiry based science for science educations and pre-service education majors. Dr. Harwood is the co-PI on two active NSF projects related to science teacher training. He was a member of the NE board of Education writing team revising science standards for Nebraska Schools.
Dr. Eric Malina is an Associate Professor of Practice in Chemistry. His instruction has been in the Introductory Chemistry courses in which he has instructed over 7000 students in his 12 year career at UNL. He routinely scores above the department average on teaching evaluations. He has received recognition for his from ASUN and National Hispanic Scholars as well as the UNL Parents Association Award. Dr. Malina has revamped the General Chemistry lab curriculum. He has presented his work at national meetings on chemistry education.
Dr. Rachael Shah is an Assistant Professor in English. She has taught none different courses including lower and upper level undergraduate course as well as graduate courses. Her evaluations are consistently above the department average. The most important contribution has been the Husker Writers program that she initiated. This program links UNL English classes with partner classes in secondary schools in Lincoln and Omaha. Dr. Shah also works with the Secondary English Education Program helping to train preservice English teachers.
