Gamma Theta Upsilon, the international geographical honor society, has recognized the Alpha Phi chapter at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a 2015 Honors Chapter.

UNL is one of 12 chapters globally that earned recognition as an Honors Chapter.

To be recognized as an Honors Chapter, chapters must:

1. Increase the number of new inductees over the previous year or induct at least two new members for programs that only award associates degrees, five new members for programs that only award bachelor's degrees, or eight new members for programs that award master's and/or doctoral degrees over an academic year.

2. Provide leadership for at least two events designed to promote geography during the academic year.

3. Develop and maintain a website and/or social media presence (Facebook page, Twitter feed, etc.) for the chapter that is regularly updated with chapter activities and meetings.

4. Submit an annual report to the GTU second vice president/awards committee chair (all requirements above must be documented in the annual report).

"This is great testimony to the overall caliber of a significant number of students who have taken three or more geography courses," said Becky Buller, geography lecturer and GTU adviser. "It is also worth noting that all inductees this past year were undergraduates. Further, the award recognizes that our Alpha Phi members are highly motivated to engage with the university community and promote geography at UNL by hosting various geographic activities."
