A panel representing five disciplines within the College of Arts and Sciences will convene at 5:30 p.m. March 26 in the Nebraska Union Auditorium to discuss the 2023-24 CAS Inquire theme “Sustainable Futures.” The event is free and open to the public and will be livestreamed. The CAS Inquire program offers a series of public lectures around a theme that changes annually, providing an avenue for students to connect with college thought leaders and peers. Each lecture is part of a one-credit course with three steps: read background material before the lecture, attend the lecture, and then discuss the topic with the speaker.
Speakers and topics this year—all of whom will take part in the March panel discussion—are:
- Patrick Bitterman, geography, gave the talk "Visions of Sustainable Futures: The Need for a (Multi-)Spatial Lens" on Sept. 12
- Mark van Roojen, philosophy, gave the Oct. 10 talk "Using What You Know to Filter Through Climate Controversy"
- Ken Bloom, physics, gave the talk "How to Do Big Science in a Climate Emergency?" on Nov. 7
- Julia Frengs, French (modern languages and literatures), gave the Jan. 30 talk "Imagining Sustainable Futures: What Literature Can do for the Earth"
- Cara Burberry, geology, gave the talk "Geology in a Green Energy Future" on Feb. 27
