Who is your employer, and where are they located?
JET Program (Japan Exchange and Teaching), located in Japan.
What is your job title and what kind of work does it involve?
As an ALT (assistant language teacher), I will work with students in a Japanese school as an English instructor and cultural ambassador.
What sparked your interest in your major(s) or area(s) of study?
I went on a school trip to Japan in high school and became interested in Japanese language and cultural exchange.
What do you see as the value of your major(s) or CAS degree?
My CAS major and minor gave me access to classes that taught diverse perspectives and were integral to helping me build both technical and practical skills that will aid me during my time abroad.
Were there any other people, activities, or events from your time at UNL that helped you get to where you are now?
Many of my professors, as well as my UNL career coach, Ms. Sai Sato Mumm, have aided me greatly in the process!
Tell us about the path you took to get to where you are today in your career and how you applied your education in your major(s) or area(s) of study to get here.
I was very involved in my studies of English, Japanese language, and studio art in high school. Building my degree around these areas made it so I have a broad range of both creative and technical skills. I was able to manage a paint your own ceramics studio for a short period of time, and now look forward to applying my creativity and understanding of language to my position as an ALT.
What are your future professional goals?
After spending time in Japan, I hope to become a either a translator, abroad program coordinator, tattoo artist, or enroll in graduate school for ceramics. I’m grateful to CAS for giving me the foundation to explore all of my different passions.
