Dorothea Mason

Name: Dorothea Mason
Majors and Minors: Anthropology and History with a minor in archaeology
Hometown: Papillion, NE
Year at UNL: Junior

Favorite book and why: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith. I love the storytelling and the artful way Smith writes.

Favorite movie and why: Legally Blonde. I love a strong female lead.

Why Anthropology?
I am studying my majors and minor because I love learning from people and their life stories; ultimately, I want to work in the field of history to continue to tell those life stories. I chose history because history is the stories that shape our now. I chose anthropology because it is the study of people; I love learning the reasons behind decisions and cultures that shape us.

The most interesting classes I have taken are The Holocaust with Dr. Steinacher and Ecological Anthropology with Dr. Sefczek.

My suggestion for new/other majors is to branch out; every conversation is an opportunity. Being afraid or quiet gets you nowhere.

Someone should choose either history or anthropology to humanize the world. Connection and learning about the world will help you tremendously in every path you could choose; both of these majors are wonderful at connecting you to the world and people around you.

Extracurricular Opportunities:
I have had many opportunities since studying at UNL. I have done historical research through UCARE and two internships, one at the Sarpy County Museum and most recently at the Durham Museum in Omaha; I have also been involved with the Women's Lacrosse Team and Alpha Omega Epsilon Sorority.

I chose these experiences because they are all things that I love and am passionate about. Everyone should choose the experiences that they are actively passionate about; there is no use in joining a group or doing an experience if you don't believe in what you are doing. Research and internships are fantastic ways to experience your chosen field.
