Emma Bitterman, a senior pursuing a double major in biochemistry and French, has worked in Dr. Becker’s biochemistry lab since Fall 2022. This summer, she was selected to participate in the prestigious Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), hosted by the National Science Foundation.
Bitterman took advantage of this experience, compiling her research and diving deep into the life of a scientist by writing a research paper and presenting her findings to experienced professionals. She also gained critical skills in initiative and independence.
“I’ve learned to have confidence working independently in the laboratory and how to organize my time.”
This semester, she will build on this development as she continues researching enzymes and proline metabolism in bacteria and their potential applications for cancer treatment.
“I’m excited for what this year holds and to see how my project develops as I gain more data,” she said.
