Junior Jacob Behnk is spending the semester with the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) in Santiago, Chile. As a double major in Spanish and global studies, this experience has allowed him to develop his Spanish conversational skills and learn more about Latin American culture and governance.
At Andrés Bello National University, Behnk is exploring the courses: Peace, Conflict, and Democracy in Latin America; Women and Society: Latin American Perspectives; International Political Economy & Business; and Chile’s Native Cultures and Languages.
“Both the professors and assignments actively encourage me to research topics beyond what is discussed during lecture, which has been essential in forming a picture of modern-day Chile and Latin America, as well as the challenges they have endured,” he said.
This knowledge will carry over in his return to America and his dream career in foreign affairs.
“I view this education abroad program as one of the most important stepping stones to achieving that dream. If anything, I hope that my own experience with stepping out of my comfort zone could be the push that another Husker needs to at least begin considering education abroad and where it might fit into the vision they have for their own future.”
