Why Global Studies?: I chose this degree because of the variety of classes I am able to take and its interdisciplinary nature. I can truly tailor my degree to the subjects I am interested in, and since I have a wide variety of interests this degree is perfect for me!
I chose Spanish as a minor because of my love for the language. I would like to work in an international organization someday, and for that it is super important to know at least one foreign language.
I chose Environmental Sustainability Studies as a minor because of my passion for the outdoors and my interest in the natural world.
I would say the most interesting class I've taken so far was Global Environmental Issues taught by Jim Benes. This class perfectly combined my interests of environmental issues, international relations, and geography! I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in any of these subjects.
Extracurricular Experiences:
This summer I was in Germany for a total of 2 and a half months! I was an Au Pair in Karlsruhe for the first half, and then I studied abroad in Marburg, Germany for the second half. I earned 6 college credits during my program, and I learned a lot of German from staying with a host family and taking 4 hours of German language per day. Going abroad is an essential thing to do to broaden your worldview; in Germany there is a huge culture around sustainability, and everyone uses public transport. This differs a lot from the culture here in the United States, but it gives me hope that we could achieve these things someday in Nebraska too.
What are you post-graduation plans?
My post-grad plans involve applying for the Fulbright Fellowship and possibly serving in the Peace Corps! I would like to have non-competitive eligibility for when I apply for government jobs in the future, which both of these opportunities provide. After that, I may consider furthering my education by either attending graduate school or law school.
Favorite book and why:
Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut. This book is full of dry humor and is well written. It takes place post World War II and is a fascinating look into the complexities of human morality.
Favorite movie and why?
Les Misérables. I am a sucker for movie musicals, and this one is one of the best! It has a really powerful message about unconditional love and grace.
