Why did you select your major(s) and minor(s)? Were there any events or people that convinced you to declare?
I selected Psychology because I am interested in the emotions and workings of a person's mind and body. I originally was going to choose a pre-med track, but I found psychology to be a better fit. Victimology was a good choice for my minor due to mental health interests within the criminal justice system. I had teachers in high school as well as personal experiences and family that helped inform my decision.
What is your favorite course you have taken from your program(s) and why?
I have enjoyed most of the psychology courses at UNL due to the great professors. If I had to choose, Psychopathology (380) was my favorite because Dr. Esseks was so great and engaging!
Have you had an internship or job? If so, please describe it and explain how your major(s) helped you with it.
This semester, I had the great opportunity to intern for and shadow a licensed professional counselor. Due to this internship, I have received a jumpstart on my knowledge of counseling and the mental health field. The most beneficial part of this experience was being able to sit in on some sessions (with clients' permission). I have been able to see how things like OCD, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse present themselves in real cases. Majoring in Psychology was a great pathway to this internship since we have discussed many similar conditions or aspects of therapy in my courses.
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to pursue a Master's program in either social work or mental health counseling in the fall of 2026. Until then, I will continue to work and gain experience in related fields. I then would like to get licensed and work as a social worker or counselor in some shape or form.
