The College of Arts and Sciences is committed to protecting academic freedom and the personal safety of our community. Cyberbullying is the use of electronic devices to harass or threaten others, including harmful, false, or mean content about another person. These attacks are often short-lived but can be disruptive.

Trolling

Posting online personal attacks, often anonymously.

Doxxing

Sharing someone’s personal details (e.g., phone number, home address) without permission.

What to Do If You’re Targeted

If you or your family are in physical danger, call 911 or if on campus call UNL PD at 2-2222.

In general

  • Notify your unit’s chair or director for guidance. Copy the college’s Dean and Sr. Director of Marketing and Communications.
  • Avoid responding to harassing messages – it often escalates the situation. Consider pausing social media use.
  • Save all messages, emails, and voicemails as evidence.

The media

  • If contacted by the media, you do not need to respond. Terri Pieper in CAS MarComm and Leslie Reed in University Communications are available for consultation.

Webpages

  • Your email and social media may be publicized. Request temporary removal of your contact information from university webpages.

Classes

  • If class disruptions are likely, discuss alternative instruction plans with your unit chair or director.
  • Does your class syllabus include a statement on no audio/video recording in the classroom?
