From
Bennet, Nebraska

Why you chose your major
I chose my major and minors because of a strong interest in pursuing medicine, particularly in underserved and underprivileged communities. Exploring this inequity and helping address it have formed a significant part of my undergraduate experience thus far (in classes, student clubs, volunteering, and more).

Favorite and/or most impactful course
So far, the class that has had the biggest impact on me is PSYC 189H (Neuroscience of Zombies). Though it was not required for my major, this psychology course combined my interests in neuroanatomy and brain diseases with a fun, engaging curriculum. Between discussions, chapter readings, quizzes, and group projects, I was given an academic challenge right at the start of my freshman year, and I have found a family in both Honors and the sciences since then.

Research or internship experience
Since my first semester of sophomore year, I have been part of the Keesey Lab of Drosophila Neurobiology. Here, I lead a project investigating thermal preference of different strains of the genus, Drosophila. Essentially, we predict that flies of similar genetics but different geographic origin could have varied patterns of thermally sensitive behavior, which may have underpinnings in migration, climate change, and resource availability. I am looking to publish a couple of manuscripts and draft two theses with this project, too, and I have been having a blast!

Other involvement
Beyond research, classes, and being a CAS Ambassador, I am an A Rank Leader for the Cornhusker Marching Band, a member of the Big Red Express (pep band), an Honors Peer Mentor Leader, an Honors Ambassador, president of Friends of MSF at UNL, treasurer of UNL MUNA, and a teaching assistant for the College of Arts and Sciences. I also serve as a volunteer Spanish translator for Clinic with a Heart.

Why you chose Nebraska
Nebraska was the perfect blend of familiarity and independence. Having grown up so close to the university, it's like a "home away from home" where I can benefit from various experiences.

Student Ambassadors are undergraduate students who talk to prospective students, parents, alumni, and the general public about the college.
