Major(s)
Psychology, Communication Studies (Pre-Nursing)
Pittsburg, KS
Why you chose your major
I chose to major in psychology because I have always been interested in understanding how people's experiences and personalities shape the way they see the world. That, coupled with my desire to care for others, has pushed me to pursue nursing with the eventual goal of becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I added a major in communications with an emphasis in health and well-being to develop stronger patient/interpersonal skills, along with a minor in positive psychology.
Favorite and/or most impactful course
One class that strongly impacted me was "100 Years of Cinema," taught by Dr. Michael Page. I took this class the first semester of my freshman year to fulfill an honors requirement because I thought it sounded interesting. With a math and science heavy schedule, this was nice, discussion-based class and also a creative outlet because we composed our own scripts as part of the course. Although it isn't necessarily pertinent to my future career, I really enjoyed it and would like to take other film/arts classes.
Research or internship experience
As a freshman, I got involved with research on campus through the psychology club. I am currently a research assistant in a psychology lab, where I assist a graduate student with her dissertation. Her research focuses on survivors of sexual violence, the impact of disclosure to another, and how to better help survivors heal. In my role, I prep participants for later interviews by providing informed consent and running them through the types of questions that will be asked, along with answering any questions they might have.
