Why you chose your major

I have known that I wanted to pursue medicine since I was young. Most people online recommend majoring in STEM if you are planning on going into medicine (to cover MCAT topics easily), and Biology was my favorite. I took AP Biology in high school and I really enjoyed it. As for my minors, Biochemistry came easily as I didn't need to take any other classes outside of my BIology major and Pre-medicine requirements. I have always loved History, and I came in with AP credit, so why not? I minored in Humanities in Medicine because I wanted to view medicine from a different angle and I wanted to engage more with the extracurriculars medicine provides. Lastly, I minored in Gerontology because the classes sounded very interesting and I knew I would be working with that demographic often in my career. I wanted to be more competent about what that demographic was going through!

Favorite and/or most impactful course

The class that has made the largest impact on me so far has been BIOS 205: Genetics, Molecular and Cellular Biology Lab. I took this class my fall semester of sophomore year, and I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the experiments we ran and it made much more sense than a chemistry lab. I looked forward to coming to lab, and my TA was incredibly kind. It was one of the first places where I felt comfortable in the STEM world, and I decided to intern for the lab the following semester!

Research or internship experience

I am currently a lab intern for the BIOS 205 lab. This means that I shadow a TA for the semester to learn how to successfully teach the lab. So far, I have learned so much and I know it will be a valuable experience for upcoming semesters and experiences.

Other involvement

I am treasurer of the Campus Red Cross Club, secretary of the American Medical Student Association, and I am an Honors Peer Mentor Leader for the Honors Program. I volunteer through the Red Cross at blood drives, and I regularly volunteer at Morrill Hall. Off campus I work as a Patient Care Technician at Bryan East Medical Center.

Why you chose Nebraska

I came to Nebraska because I knew they had a good pre-medicine program. I really liked the campus and the overall vibe of the university as well. Most of my friends went here and it was close to my family, so it seemed like a good fit. In addition, the university opened new opportunities to me that I didn't have elsewhere such as getting into my major, getting into the honors program, and giving me a large amount of scholarships.

Student Ambassadors are undergraduate students who talk to prospective students, parents, alumni, and the general public about the college.
