What gets you excited about Meteorology-Climatology?
I love how many opportunities there are specialize and dive deep into a certain aspect of meteorology or climatology. We're all in the same major but have very different perspectives to weather based just on our knowledge bases and our favorite types of weather to experience or forecast for!
Favorite Meteorology-Climatology class or instructor so far? Why?
My favorite class I took was METR 443 (Severe Storms), taught by Brian Barjenbruch from the NWS. It was so cool to have someone from the NWS come teach us a class, and I learned a lot of important skills and applications to operational forecasting. Said another way, it is sort of an application of the scientific theories learned in previous courses.
What are you excited about doing after graduation?
I am really excited to continue learning and preparing to join the weather enterprise, whether that be going to graduate school or beginning a career in operational forecasting.
What is a goal you have accomplished as a Husker?
I think one goal I have accomplished as a Husker is that I felt I was a very involved student and took advantages to the opportunities offered to me despite any apprehension that I had. I am the vice president of our AMS chapter; I was a volunteer and Hollings scholar at the NWS; and I have been able to complete extracurricular projects and a senior thesis (as a part of the Honors program) with my meteorology professors. I had always made it a point to talk to my professors, get to know them, and learn about their research. Because of that, I have become more comfortable with making professional connections outside of campus.
What do you wish you would have known when you started as a Meteorology-Climatology Major that you know now?
One thing I wish I knew coming in is how supportive of a community our department and the overall meteorology enterprise is. While small, you will have the opportunity to connect with many people who encourage questions and wanting to talk to you and help you out however they can. The same can be said for our meteorology professors and advisors. Go to office hours and talk to your professors, they want to learn about you as much as you want to learn about them.
What do you hope to cross off your “bucket list” in the next few years?
One thing I would love to do is travel to Europe at some point!
