Minor
Biochemistry, Humanities in medicine on the pre-med track

Hometown
Lincoln, NE

Why you chose your major
I chose to major in biology because it allowed me to better understand the science behind health and medicine, and it also prepared me for research studies that align with my career goals of working in the medical field. Biochemistry was a great addition for my minor as it complemented my biology major and focused more on the complexities of chemical processes that drive life. Finally, I added humanities in medicine as my minor because I believe that understanding human experiences is an important aspect to science and medicine. This minor helps me to explore the ethical, cultural, and personal components of healthcare. Through my chosen major and minors at Nebraska, I am able to bridge the gap between science and humanity and pursue my career goals in medicine.

Favorite and/or most impactful course
The class that has made the biggest impact on me was Organic Chemistry 1. It was one of the most challenging classes I have taken in college, but it taught me a lot about myself. This class taught me more than just organic chemistry. It showed me the importance of perseverance and self-discipline. When I earned an A in the class, it was not just about the grade, it proved that I was capable of achieving my goals through academic growth and determination throughout the semester while balancing my other campus involvements, research, and work!

Research or internship experience
I am currently doing UCARE Research at the Morrison Center. My research focuses on the antiviral defense in plants. I am using CRISPR and Cas9 through a floral dipping method with Agrobacterium tumefaciens to edit the genes of RDR3a, RDR3b, and RDR3c. The results that will be later discovered from this research study will not only significantly impact agriculture and contribute to food security, but it will also set a base foundation for future research studies with similar antiviral silencing mechanisms of other crops through the understanding of the unknown RDR genes- RDR3a, RDR3b, and RDR3c. Through my research, I have been given the opportunity to deepen my understanding of the complexities of plant virology as well as make meaningful connections along the way!

Other involvement
UCARE Research, VSA (Vietnamese Student Association), Tennis Club, Honors Peer Mentoring, Chemistry TA

Why you chose Nebraska
I chose Nebraska because I wanted to stay close to home, and the resources and faculty here are well-suited to help me reach my academic and career goals of medicine!
