Why you chose your major
Firstly, I chose biochemistry as my major for several reasons: I have a strong interest in both biology and chemistry, and biochemistry bridges the two; the major fulfills many medical school requirements; and UNL has a highly reputable biochemistry program. For my minors, I chose chemistry because it is relatively easy to complete, given that many of the requirements are already covered in the biochemistry major. Additionally, I found several chemistry courses particularly intriguing. For my psychology minor, I have always been fascinated by the mind, and UNL offers a wide range of engaging neuropsychology courses.

Favorite and/or most impactful course
This is a tough choice, but I would have to say that the LIFE120L Lab has had the biggest impact so far. Through my engagement in this course, I was recommended to become a teaching assistant. One thing led to another, and I have been a lab teaching assistant for five semesters and a lecture learning assistant for four, as of this semester. An honorable mention would be PSYC 273 – Brain and Behavior, which solidified my interest in neuropsychology.

Research or internship experience
Regarding research, starting last semester I joined Dr. Limei Zhang's lab where we focus on the structure and function of metallomolecules that play a role in redox sensing, metal balance, and detoxification. Personally, I am investigating the specific 3D structure of the Rv2699c protein found in the tuberculosis bacteria – a non-virulent strain – as well as its general role in cell life. Interestingly, it is not know what this protein actually does, hence my research.

Other involvement
Aside from research and my general course load, I am a TA for the BIOS314 microbiology lab, and an LA for the LIFE120 lecture this semester. Also, I am a member of the biochemistry club and the American Society for Biochemistry and Microbiology here at UNL, and am newly participating in the UNL Bowling League.

Why you chose Nebraska
I decided to come to Nebraska because of the phenomenal biochemistry program, the strong sense of community, and the heritage – I am a fourth-generation Husker.
