New Student Enrollment

Preparing for Advising and Registration

Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences. Whether you are a transfer student or an incoming freshmen, now that you are signed up for an advising appointment, this website will help you prepare for that meeting.

  • Look for an email from the college three days prior to your scheduled advising meeting with information about your assigned academic advisor and either the office location and directions (for in-person meetings) or the zoom meeting link (for virtual meetings).
  • You have the option to complete the Language Placement Exam for Spanish, French or German. If you intend to take a language course in any of these three languages, please take the placement exam prior to your advising meeting.
  • Watch Video 1, "CAS Academic Overview and Degree Requirements," and Video 2, "Preparing for Your NSE Advising Appointment".

What to expect from your advising meeting

For about one hour, your advisor will get to know you and discuss:

  • your academic and career interests and goals
  • your placement exam results
  • any credit you may be bringing from dual enrollment, AP, IB, or other sources
  • major, minor, and degree requirements
  • any remaining questions you have and how to get answers

In your advising meeting, you will utilize the degree planner and enrollment scheduler to plan out and register for courses based on your individual needs. You will leave your advising meeting enrolled in the courses you will take in your first semester.

After Your NSE Date

Whether you attend your orientation date before or after your advising meeting, we are available year-round to answer any questions that you have. Your advisor is a great resource to reach out to first, and our college advising team is available via casadvising@unl.edu as well.

  • Transfer students: make sure to have your official transcripts sent from your previous institutions as soon as possible to ensure that you and your advisor can effectively plan your path to graduation.

Check your huskers.unl.edu email regularly

You will have access to your official huskers.unl.edu email after your NSE date. All university communication will use this email address, so set it up right away (here's how) and check it regularly.

CASC 50

CASC 050 will be your first course at UNL, which you will start before your other courses for the semester. The course will open approximately two weeks before the semester begins. All students will receive information via their huskers.unl.edu email with more details once the course has opened.
