Sebastian Elbaum, professor of computer science and engineering, was named a distinguished member by the Association for Computing Machinery. He is one of 45 people from around the world named to the 2016 list. Elbaum’s achievements, along with the other members, have advanced the science, engineering and education of computing, and highlight the growing role of computing in the major technological advances shaping society today. Tim Gay, professor of physics and astronomy, has been elected as Speaker of the Council for the American Physical Society. Gay will serve as Speaker-Elect in 2017 and commence his duties as Speaker in 2018. The APS Speaker of the Council presides over the Council of Representatives, comprised of national and international APS members as well as representatives for society divisions, forums and sections. UNL employees received awards at the University of Nebraska Office Professionals luncheon Nov. 8. The Floyd S. Oldt Silver Pen Award was presented to Gretchen Mills, administrative technician for the Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Consortium. The Silver Pen Award honors office/service employees who have demonstrated superior performance while employed at UNL and who have made significant contributions to the university community. Wendy Smith, associate director of the Center for Science, Mathematics and Computer Education, was presented the UNOPA Boss of the Year Award. The Floyd S. Oldt Boss of the Year Award recognizes University of Nebraska employees who demonstrate outstanding skills in employee supervision and interpersonal relations.
