Angela Ching: Don't measure the value of humanities in dollars

If you Google “in defense of the humanities,” you get 1,840,000 results. Pages and pages of articles, columns, studies and speeches, all published in the name of protecting this academic discipline. So why am I adding to this already crowded topic? Because it’s clear that the humanities are still considered antiquated, useless and an overall waste of time.

I’m an English major. My sister majored in English and anthropology. My mom majored in sociology, my dad in political science. You could say we’re fairly removed from any of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields. I grew up in a house that had books literally stacked from the floor to the ceiling, so I sometimes forget that not everyone has the same high regard for the humanities that I do.
