CAS Graduate Student Writing Retreat

September 11-15, 2024
Cedar Point Biological Station, Ogallala, Nebraska

The goal of this interdisciplinary retreat is to learn and practice a diversity of strategies that support individuals in developing a sustainable writing practice. Intended for graduate students who are near or past their candidacy exam and/or have started a substantial writing project, the retreat will provide them with mindful and sustainable approaches to daily writing with frameworks for integrating writing as part of their professional development.

  • Short morning conversations, afternoon breakout sessions, two-hour blocks of writing time, and optional evening fireside chats.
  • Meals in the historic Goodall Lodge.
  • Shared housing provided in the rustic but comfortable camp buildings at Cedar Point Biological Station, which overlooks Lake Ogallala in the heart of the western high plains.
  • Guided hikes and activities to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings.

We invite graduate students from all disciplines and programs in the college, and we seek a balance of students from the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

All students’ lodging, meals, and other accommodations will be provided by the Dean's Office.

The facility is accessible for all people. If you need specific accommodations, do not hesitate to reach out or consider applying.

Comments from past participants

“This retreat offered a rare opportunity to learn from and with interdisciplinary peers all while learning deepening our connections to Nebraska’s environment.”

"During the retreat I was able to talk about my emerging dissertation ideas as well as learn about the key factors which allow for academic writers to continue working within a context of a busy schedule and frequent rejections."
