Christian Binek will give the talk “The Rise of Nanotechnology: Small Machines with Big Impact” on Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. in the City Union Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The lecture continues the theme “The Rise of the Machines” for the CAS Inquire program, serving as a starting point for discussion that students in the program have with peers, staff, and faculty.
Binek is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the interim director of the Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience, and the director of the Nebraska Nanoscale Facility.
“All physical properties of matter are determined by the underlying atomic structure which now can be manipulated almost at will,” he said, “limited only by our imagination and the constraints determined by the fundamental laws of quantum physics.”
His talk will introduce nanotechnology, present examples of state-of-the-art nanostructures, and outline current applications—such as the internet of things—and future developments.
“In all areas affected by nanotechnology,” he said, “radical transformations take place beyond our linear intuition.”
Binek’s talk is the fourth in the series, which opened in September of 2019 with a discussion of British novels and continued with discussions on drones and genetics.
