Eight CAS students among Gilman Scholarship winners

Seven undergraduate students from the College of Arts and Sciences are among 13 students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to earn Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships, allowing them to study abroad in during the spring 2018 semester.

The program’s goal is to allow students to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages and economies — making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector.

Recipients from the college:

  • Keegan Adams, junior, global studies, China
  • Tyler Matson, sophomore, global studies and political science, Russia
  • Khenda Mustafa, senior, global studies, Morocco
  • Julie Peterson, senior, global studies, Japan
  • Jaime Stephenson, junior, psychology, Ireland
  • Lane Vasa, senior, German and business administration, Germany
  • Joshua Ward, senior, global studies, Belgium
  • Alexander Webster, senior, German, Germany

Additional accolades:

  • Matson and Mustafa received an additional $3,000 on top of the maximum award because they are studying Critical Need Languages while abroad.

More about the program:

  • Nationally competitive scholarship awarded three times a year by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
  • This round was awarded to fewer than 1,000 students from 386 universities and colleges.
  • Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward study abroad or internship program costs.
