Major: Communication studies

Diego wanted to get involved on campus and has always been interested in looking out for the well-being of other people. A friend recommended the UHC Student Advisory Board, and he was intrigued by the opportunity to help students with well-being from the administrative side.⠀

The UHC Student Advisory Board plans events and works with administration to communicate and promote healthy living on campus. Recently, the board has been running focus groups with students, asking about their experiences and getting feedback on how to improve services from the health center.⠀

How has it impacted his student life at Nebraska?⠀

“It’s given me a real opportunity to find a health-related avenue that I can plug myself into and learn about right here on campus. When you’re applying to medical school, they want you to have experiences that can sometimes be hard to find or you might have to leave campus.” ⠀

Being a part of the board has also helped Diego realize how to better balance his own well-being.⠀

“Being part of this group makes you attuned to the fact that there are different types of well-being. I have to practice what I preach, so if I’m going to represent this, I should also be looking out for myself.” ⠀

His well-being tip for other students is to utilize resources on campus like those offered by Big Red Resilience and Well-being, one being the well-being coaching program. ⠀

“You’re not speaking with a psychologist. You're speaking with a peer. I think it’s a great resource for when you want to talk to someone but don’t feel like you want to see a professional." ⠀

His advice for balancing the 9 dimensions of well-being.

“I think it’s unrealistic to say you’re going to be 100% at 9 at all times. So I think students should be aware of where their stress tends to come from and what helps them to avoid stress. It’s a work smarter, not harder kind of thing.”

He is also a member of the college's Student Advisory Board.
