Majors: Environmental Studies, Global Studies

Hometown: Lincoln, Nebraska

Madison Zucco was featured as a #NebraskaHonors senior spotlight this week. Madison appreciates how the Honors Program works to support students seeking out global experiences, and she has taken advantage of several of those opportunities, including the Honors in Berlin spring break program in 2019 and an Honors course focused on Winnipeg, Canada. Her favorite, though, was the Honors Global Dialogue in Krakow, Poland:

"I went on this trip after my freshman year and was introduced to a rich culture and unique set of historical events that Poland has to offer. I would wholeheartedly recommend applying for one of these experiences because it has been one of the best experiences I’ve had in college."

After graduation, Madison will move to Washington D.C. to work for Defenders of Wildlife as a climate adaptation policy analyst. She credits UNL and Nebraska Honors especially with preparing her for this next chapter by providing opportunities aligned with her interests and challenging her to be a leader in the environmental and policy fields - including her Honors senior project, a thesis paper on Indigenous Forest Sovereignty.

"Forest policy and Indigenous environmental knowledge are the fields that I want to go forward in for graduate school and in the professional world, so it was incredibly useful for me to begin this research and begin to make connections in this area as a senior."
