SciComm 2016, a science communication conference being held on the University of Nebraska campus September 23 and 24, is helping to establish UNL as a national hub of science communication activities.

The event was inspired by the success of last year’s UNL SciComm symposium, organized by Biological Sciences postdoctoral researcher Matt Wilkins. Science communication experts from nine UNL departments, Doane University, and the University of Colorado shared their experience and discussed strategies to effectively engage the public with scientific research.

SciComm 2016 is supported by numerous campus departments, in collaboration with Doane University and Lincoln Public Schools.  This two-day event will include:

  • a broader impacts workshop offered in collaboration with the National Alliance for Broader Impacts
  • Science Night Live!, a free science outreach event at the Railyard in downtown Lincoln where UNL researchers and SciComm conference participants will share their work with the public
  • a symposium featuring speakers from physics, biology, chemistry, sociology, museum specialists, and K-12 educators, who will discuss innovative approaches to science outreach, best practices in science communication, strategies for teaching controversial topics, and sociopsychological challenges to science engagement
  • a keynote address from TED speaker Melissa Marshall

Registration for SciComm 2016 is now open, and the conference has already attracted registered attendees from across the nation. There is no registration fee for the broader impacts workshop or Science Night Live! in the Railyard; there is a $20 fee for the symposium, which includes lunch.  Registration will be capped at 300.
