“Nebraska has always felt like a second home,” new Husker basketball coach Fred Hoiberg said.

As we look forward to the next part of the basketball team’s journey, here are a couple of quick items about Hoiberg’s academic connections.

  • Fred’s father, alumnus Eric Hoiberg, earned his undergraduate degree, Master’s degree, and Ph.D. in sociology from the university. His 1973 dissertation was “Socio-economic status, residential location, and intrametropolitan mobility: a longitudinal analysis”.
  • “My other grandfather, Otto Hoiberg, was a history professor here for almost 30 years,” the new coach said. “To be honest with you, he’s the smartest person that I have ever known, and he moved back to Iowa in his later years and I was able to spend a lot of time with him. Those were very special moments to be able to talk to my grandpa because of how worldly and how smart he was.”

The college welcomes Coach Hoiberg to the Husker community.

Thanks to sociology professor Dan Hoyt and anthropology professor Wayne Babchuk for providing some of the background.
